What is Jardiance?
Jardiance is a brand-name prescription medication. It was first approved for medical use in 2014 and has since become a very popular medication with more than two million prescriptions in the United States as of 2017. Jardiance comes in the form of an oral tablet, containing a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor called Empagliflozin. Each tablet contains 10mg or 25mg of Empagliflozin which after administration, is metabolized primarily by glucuronidation and excreted through urine. Jardiance does not yet have a generic alternative and it could be quite a few more years before we see one become available. However, we carry the brand-name medication, Jardiance, for a more generic-like price which is available in both strengths. Jardiance is a prescription medication and therefore you will be required to present a valid prescription. Call our toll-free number of 1-877-385-8998 to place an order.
What is Jardiance used for?
Jardiance is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, a life-long chronic condition affecting approximately 34 million Americans. When a person has type 2 diabetes, it affects the way their body metabolizes sugar, known medically as glucose. Glucose metabolism is an important and necessary function for humans to live, as it provides your body with fuel (energy) for brain function as well as other organs and their functions. Many tissues can also use fat or protein for energy, but others – such as the brain or red blood cells – can only use glucose for energy, hence why glucose metabolism is so important. Insulin is a hormone in our body which converts the glucose from your diet into energy (or to store it for future use) and also keeps blood sugar levels balance; insulin is created in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes is when the body doesn’t know how to properly use insulin or does produce a sufficient amount of it, which results in high blood sugar levels. Having high blood sugar causes symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, and stomach pain; there are various symptoms that can occur. Using Jardiance can help maintain proper blood sugar levels and helps to prevent symptoms and further complications. Leaving high blood sugar untreated for too long can result in kidney damage leading to dialysis, eye damage leading to blindness, and an increase risk of heart disease or stroke. Jardiance is commonly prescribed along with a proper diet and exercise program and may also be taken with other medications such as metformin or insulin to help boost efficacy. Additionally, Jardiance may also be used to help lessen the risk of death from heart attack or stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
What does Jardiance do?
Type 2 diabetes causes blood sugar to be higher than normal due to a heavy presence of SGLT2 proteins in the body (largely found in the kidneys); these proteins account for roughly 90% of glucose reabsorption into the blood which would otherwise pass through the urine and out of the body. Jardiance belongs to the drug class of SGLT2 inhibitors, which means it is able to block the actions of SGLT2 proteins; in other words, Jardiance can block the reabsorption of glucose into the blood stream. This allows the glucose to pass out of the body through urination instead, ultimately lowering the amount of glucose found in the blood stream (blood sugar levels).
How much does Jardiance cost?
Many pharmacies will vary slightly when it comes to the cost of medication in the United States; prices also vary more significantly when purchased internationally. For example, the average retail cost for a 28 tablet supply (10mg) of Jardiance is in the mid-high hundreds range, which is close to 5 times as much for the exact same supply at My Drug Center. We carry the brand-name medication for $119 when you buy a 28 tablet supply (10mg). We also have a supply of 90 tablets for as low as $2.28 per tablet; close to 9 times cheaper than the average retail price for 90 tablets in the United States. Both strengths – 10mg and 25mg – can be purchased in quantities of 28, 84, and 90. You must have a valid prescription to obtain this medication, at which point you can call our toll free number to place an order; 1-877-835-8998.
What are the side effects of Jardiance?
Some of the most common side effects of this medication are dehydration, dizziness, lightheadedness, and weakness. While these are the most common side effects, be aware that there are many different possible side effects that may occur. Also keep in mind that side effects are a normal response of the body when taking a new medication and should not alarm you. If they do become unmanageable or do not subside with time, consult with your doctor. Additionally, there may be certain ways you can relieve or avoid side effects; for example, to avoid dehydration, ensure you are drinking plenty of water and for dizziness or lightheadedness, avoid getting up too quickly from sitting or lying positions. You can ask your healthcare professional on more ways to battle your side effects if needed.
How long does it take for Jardiance to work?
Everyone has unique personal factors, such as their age, weight, and gender, which can influence the way your body responds to medication, including how fast it takes to work. Since there are many factors that influence the answer, only a generalized answer can be given. With that being said, your blood sugar levels may begin to improve within the first few weeks of treatment. However, Jardiance is used as a long-term medication and can take up to 24 weeks to become fully effective and provide clinical results. Ensure you follow all directions given to you by your doctor, including any diet and exercise programs set in place to achieve the quickest results. If after several weeks, you do not feel any improvement within your condition, you should consult with your doctor.
Why is Jardiance so expensive?
Jardiance was only approved for medical use in 2014 making it a newer medication; this leads us to a few different reasons as to why it may be so expensive…
Firstly, new medications are usually expensive due to the high cost of researching, developing, and then marketing the new medication. It takes roughly 10 years to get from the point of initial discovery of the drug to placing it on the market for sale, throughout 4 different phases of clinical research. On average, it costs around $1-2 billion to research and develop a successful medication.
Additionally, when a manufacture presents a new medication, they have the option to patent it, which prevents generic manufactures from creating and marketing their own form of the medication. This can stretch out for many consecutive years after the brand product has been approved, allowing for many years without competitors, and with no competitors, they can essentially pick and choose any price they want with minimal consequences.
Furthermore, Medicare considers Jardiance as a tier 3 medication. This means it’s going to be more expensive than all the drugs in tier 1 and tier 2 of the formulary. However, Jardiance isn’t universally expensive; outside of the United States, Jardiance can be found for a much more reasonable price. You can purchase brand-name Jardiance through My Drug Center for as low as $119.00 when you purchase a quantity of 28 tablets.
Who makes Jardiance?
Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals manufactures and markets Jardiance. It is also marketed by Eli Lilly and Company, a partner of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals. The manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world and has been around for over a century, being founded in 1885 by Albert Boehringer. It is also the largest privately owned pharmaceutical company, owned fully by the Boehringer, Liebrecht, and von Baumbach families with over 47,700 employees globally. Eli Lilly and Company has also been around for many years, almost a century and a half; it was founded in 1876 by a chemist and veteran of the American Civil War, Colonel Eli Lilly. Eli Lilly and Company is the largest manufacturer of psychiatric medications, producing popular medications like Prozac (fluoxetine), Dolophine (methadone), Cymbalta (duloxetine), and Zyprexa (olanzapine). These two companies also market the popular Tradjenta (Linagliptin) together; another medication used for type 2 diabetes.
When does Jardiance go generic?
As of right now, there is no set date in which a generic for Jardiance will be available. It is unclear exactly when we can expect one to become available, but it is likely we will not see a generic for Jardiance for a few years to come. This may be due to the fact that Jardiance was only approved for medical use in 2014, which makes it a newer medication. Most new medications will not have a generic alternative available because brand manufacturers are often given the opportunity to have marketing exclusivity (meaning generic manufacturers cannot produce their own form of the medication for a certain amount of time) to give them time to make up for the high cost of developing the new medication. It can cost around $2 billion to research, develop, and market a successful new medication. Meanwhile, there are alternate ways to save money on the name brand medication. We offer reduced prices on Jardiance at My Drug Center.
How long does Jardiance stay in your system?
The amount of time it takes the medication to clear from your system will vary slightly between each patient. Certain factors such as age and weight can influence how long it takes a medication to clear from your system. However, you can find an estimate as to how long it may take by using the half-life of the medication. All medications have a half-life, which measures the amount of time it takes the concentration of the medication to drop by half (50%). If you take the half-life of the medication and multiply it by 5, you will get the estimated time it will take to clear from the system. Jardiance has an average half-life of about 12.4 hours, therefore following your last dose; it could take around 62 hours (about 2.5 days) to completely clear from your system.
