What is Trental ER?

Trental ER is an oral extended-release tablet made up of a miscellaneous coagulation modifier called pentoxifylline. We carry both the brand name Trental ER and the generic alternative, which is sold as pentoxifylline. Both are available as 400mg doses!

Trental ER is a medication used to help treat a condition called intermittent claudication, as well as reducing some of its symptoms. This condition causes pain which is a result of insufficient blood flow to muscles during the time of exercise. Commonly, this pain is located in the legs after walking for a certain amount of time at a certain pace. It is called intermittent claudication because the pain is not constant; it only occurs from the start to the end of the exercise, but can end up becoming more severe and cause pain during times of rest as well.

Trental ER (pentoxifylline) is effective at treating intermittent claudication because of its ability to change your blood to help it flow easier through narrow blood vessels, which helps increase the amount of oxygen that can be carried through blood when the muscles need more (like during exercise).

Follow only directions given to you by your doctor. Avoid taking larger or smaller amounts of this medication, or taking it for longer than recommended. You may need frequent medical tests done while being treated with Trental ER.

Take this medication 3 times per day, each with a meal. Do not crush, chew, or break open these tablets; swallow whole.

Do not use Trental ER (pentoxifylline)

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to pentoxifylline, caffeine, or theophylline or if you have recently had any type of bleeding in your brain or the retina of your eyes.

Dose adjustment or special precautions may be required.

To ensure this medication is right for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had coronary artery disease, liver, kidney, or heart disease, a stomach or intestinal ulcer, a history of bleeding in your brain or inside your eyes, a history of heart attack or stroke, if you have recently had surgery, also using theophylline, or if you use medicine to treat or prevent blood clots.

Risks

It is not known if this medication will harm an unborn baby; you should speak with your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant.

This medication can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Speak with your doctor before breastfeeding if you are currently taking Trental ER.

Common side effects of Trental ER (pentoxifylline) may include:

dizziness, headache; nausea, vomiting; diarrhea, gas; or bloating, upset stomach.

The above side effects should not alarm you.

Serious side effects of Trental ER (pentoxifylline) may include:

chest pain; pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest; red or pink urine; a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; or

signs of stomach bleeding- bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

If you have any of the above side effects or signs of complications, contact your doctor right away.

What is Pentoxifylline?

Trental ER (Pentoxifylline) is a medication that is used to improve symptoms found in a blood flow problem that is usually located in the legs and arms, otherwise known as intermittent claudication due to occlusive artery disease.
