What is Toprol XL?

Toprol XL is prescribed to be used alone or together with other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Blood pressure is a measurement of the amount of force in a person's blood vessels when their heart is beating and at rest. If someone has high blood pressure, it means that their heart is working harder than it should to pump blood around the body. If this continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. Toprol XL is also used to treat severe chest pain (angina), and heart failure, and lowers the risk of repeated heart attacks.

How does Toprol XL work?

Toprol XL comes as a tablet for oral administration and contains the active ingredient Metoprolol Succinate. The Metoprolol Succinate dosage in this drug is a beta-blocker, which works by preventing norepinephrine (adrenalin) from acting on beta receptors in the blood vessels and in the heart. This relaxes the blood vessels, which help lower the heart rate and decrease the heart’s demand for oxygen. Blood pressure is then lowered, and chest pain is reduced.

Before taking your prescribed medication read all the instructions that was provided by your pharmacist. Take Toprol XL orally once a day with a full glass of water. This medication may be administered with or without a meal. Bloating/swelling, difficult/laboured breathing, tingling of hands or feet, wheezing, unusual weight gain, fainting, and irregular heartbeat.
