Topicort Gel is used to help treat the inflammation resulting from plaque psoriasis or other skin conditions. Psoriasis is a long term skin disease where the skin cells have a much faster rate of growth and because of this, the surface of the skin will collect a buildup of cells. The buildup will form red, raised patches that are covered with silver-colored scales.

Topicort Gel (desoximetasone) is effective at treating inflammation caused by skin conditions such as plaque psoriasis because as a steroid, it can reduce the inflammation.

Do not use this medication through the mouth; it is meant for skin use only. If you get it in your eyes, rinse them out well with water. Ensure you follow your doctor’s instructions on how to use this medication very carefully.

To use this medication, wash your hands and ensure they are dry before proceeding. Apply a small thin layer of Gel to the affected areas of skin; rub it in gently.

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to desoximetasone.

Topicort Gel is not approved for those under the age of 18 years old.

Dose adjustment or special precautions may be required

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any type of skin infection, a skin reaction to any type of steroid medication, liver disease, diabetes, or an adrenal gland disorder.

Risks

Those with diabetes should be aware that this medication can increase the sugar levels in the blood or urine.

Children are more likely to experience side effects because they are able to absorb larger amounts of medication through the skin.

It has not yet been established if this medication will harm an unborn child. You should speak with your doctor before using this product.

Breast feeding may not be safe to do while using Topicort Gel. If you are breast feeding, it is recommended you speak with your doctor before starting treatment.

Common side effects of Topicort Gel (desoximetasone) may include:

rash, itching, or irritation around your mouth; burning, irritation, itching, or dryness of treated skin; redness or crusting around your hair follicles; increased hair growth; blisters, pimples, or crusting of treated skin; changes in color of treated skin; white or "pruned" appearance of the skin; or stretch marks.

The above side effects should not alarm you.

Serious side effects of Topicort Gel (desoximetasone) may include:

worsening of your skin condition; redness, warmth, swelling, oozing, or severe irritation of any treated skin; blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights; or

high blood sugar; increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, fruity breath odor.
