Description

Topamax is an oral tablet consisting of an anticonvulsant called topiramate. We carry this medication in both the brand name and the generic alternative in 25mg, 50mg, 100mg, and 200mg!

Topamax is prescribed to treat seizures and can also be used to prevent migraines. Seizures are uncontrolled and sudden electrical disturbances in the brain causing changes in behavior, movements, or feelings, and may provoke different levels of consciousness. A migraine is a type of headache that is characterized by moderate to severe recurrent headaches, typically affecting one half of the head for a few hours to a few days.

Topamax (topiramate) it isn’t known exactly how this medication works to treat seizures or migraines, but it is thought to have an effect on the chemicals, channels, receptors, and enzymes in your brain, which affects these conditions.

To ensure this medication is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had glaucoma or other eye problems, diabetes, metabolic acidosis, kidney disease, kidney stones, dialysis, lung disease, breathing problems, mood problems, depression, suicidal thoughts or actions, an eating disorder, liver disease, soft or brittle bones, a growth disorder, or if you are sick with diarrhea.

Risks

This medication can cause metabolic acidosis; a high level of acid in the blood. This can weaken your bones, cause kidney stones, or cause growth problems in children or harm to an unborn baby.

Some patients find they have suicidal thoughts when first taking this medication. Family and/or caregivers should be alert to changes.

If you become pregnant during treatment; consult your doctor but do not discontinue use. Your doctor will tell you how to properly stop taking this medication. Stopping this medication suddenly can cause seizures to occur.

Topamax can make birth control less effective; use non-hormonal birth control methods while being treated with this medication.

This drug can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Do not breast feed while using this medication until you have discussed the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Drink plenty of fluids while being treated with Topamax; this will help reduce the risk of kidney stones or an electrolyte imbalance.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Topamax (topiramate) may include:

fever, weight loss; numbness or tingling in your arms and legs; flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling); headache, dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling, slow reactions; mood problems, feeling nervous; nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, indigestion; cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat; or changes in your sense of taste.

The above side effects should not alarm you.

Serious side effects of Topamax (topiramate) may include:

vision problems, eye pain or redness, sudden vision loss (can be permanent if not treated quickly); confusion, problems with thinking or memory, trouble concentrating, problems with speech;

dehydration symptoms - decreased sweating, high fever, hot and dry skin;

signs of a kidney stone - severe pain in your side or lower back, painful or difficult urination;

signs of too much acid in your blood - irregular heartbeats, feeling tired, loss of appetite, trouble thinking, feeling short of breath; or

signs of too much ammonia in your blood - vomiting, unexplained weakness, feeling like you might pass out.
