Do not use Tofranil (imipramine hydrochloride)
Do not use this medication if you have recently had a heart attack or used an MAO inhibitor, or if you are allergic to imipramine or other similar antidepressants.
Do not give this medication to a child without the medical advice of a doctor.
Dose adjustment or special precautions may be required
To ensure this medication is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have heart disease, a history of heart attack, stroke, seizures, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or other mental illness, kidney or liver disease, overactive thyroid, adrenal gland tumor, diabetes, narrow-angle glaucoma, problems with urination, or a condition in which you are being treated with electroconvulsive therapy.
Risks
Some younger patients have thoughts about suicide when first taking Tofranil. Stay alert to any possible mood or behavior changes. Tell your doctor about any new or worsening symptoms.
It has not yet been established if this medication will harm an unborn child. You should speak with your doctor before using this product.
It is not known if this medication will pass into breast milk or if it will harm a nursing infant. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
Older patients may be more sensitive to side effects of this drug.
