Description

What is Synalar Ointment (Fluocinolone) prescribed for?

Eczema is a skin condition; its symptoms include itchy, red, and dry skin that is caused by inflammation. And while some would assume it is an allergic reaction, eczema is not, and can be caused by a number of factors.

Dermatitis may look like a rash, your skin becomes red and tender after you have touched something. If it is an allergy, your immune system is involved. After you have touched something your system thinks that is under attack, and it springs into action by making antibodies to fight off the unseen invader. A chain of events begins to unfold, which eventually leads to the release of chemicals, include histamine. This is what causes the allergic reaction, or in this case, the itchy rash.

This medication is used to treat a variety of skin conditions which includes eczema, dermatitis, allergies, and rashes.  It is designed to help reduce swelling, itching, and the redness that can occur when dealing with these types of conditions. This medication is a medium-strength corticosteroid.

This medication is to be used on the skin only. However are should not use it on the face, groin, or underarms, unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Wash and dry your hands before use. When ready, clean and dry the affected area. Then apply a thin film of the medication to the affected are and gently rub it in.  This is done usually 3 to 4 times a day, or as directed to you by your doctor. When done, do not wrap, cover, or bandage the area.

After applying the medication, wash your hands again. Avoid getting this mediation in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you do however, get this medication in these areas, be sure to flush thoroughly.

Use this medication only for the condition for which it was prescribed. Do not use it for longer than prescribed.

Cautions

Before taking this medication, it is best to advise your doctor if you are allergic to Fluocinolone; or to other corticosteroids (e.g., hydrocortisone, prednisone); or to any other medications or allergies in general. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

You should also let your doctor know of all of your medical history. Especially if you have ever dealt with any of these experiences in the past; poor blood circulation, diabetes, immune system problems.

Do not use if there is an infection or sore in the area to be treated.

Rarely, using corticosteroid medications for a long time or over large areas of skin can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Therefore, before having surgery or emergency treatment, or if you get a serious illness/injury, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication or have used this medication within the past few months.
