What is Savella (Milnacipran) prescribed for?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition. It is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Many studies have researchers believe that this disorder amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the mind processes pain signals. It can cause a troubling range of symptoms, from pain to fatigue.  It can start at any age and is more common in women then it is in men. The exact cause is unknown. However, the pain may be triggered by hormone changes, physical injury, or intense emotional trauma.

Savella affects certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. An abnormality in these chemicals is thought to be related to Fibromyalgia. Savella is not used for depression, although it does work similarity to antidepressants.

How does Savella (Milnacipran) work?

With Fibromyalgia you may experience a lower threshold of pain, and this may be a direct result in changes in your nervous system. This may be the cause of your sensitivity towards pain. All of this could be a result of the wrong levels of neurotransmitters.

Savella allows more of the neurotransmitters to travel from neuron to neuron. And it increases the levels of neurotransmitters which may ease pain and reduce fatigue, and even help with memory.
