Description

What is Renagel (Sevelamer Hydrochloride) prescribed for?

Kidney disease can affect your body’s ability to clean your blood, filter extra water out of your blood, and help control your blood pressure. It can also affect red blood cell production and vitamin D metabolism needed for bone health.

This medication is used to lower high blood pressure levels in patients who are on dialysis due to a severe kidney disease. Dialysis removes some phosphate from your blood, but it is difficult to remove enough to keep your phosphate levels balanced. Decreasing blood phosphate levels can help you keep your bones strong and prevent unsafe build-up of minerals in your body and possibly decrease the risk of heart disease and strokes that may be a result from high phosphate levels. This medication, Renagel, works by holding onto phosphate from the diet so that it may pass out of your body.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this medication, consult with your doctor or pharmacist on the matter. Take this medication directly has prescribed, and make sure to read the instructions on the prescription label.  And if you have any concerns, speak with your medical professional.

This medication is to be taken by mouth, usually 3 times a day, with meals. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet.

Remember the dosage is based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment, as well as any other medications you may take to lower your phosphate levels.

Take this medication on a regular basis to gain the most benefit. Just remember to take it 3 times a day with each meal, or on a schedule give to you by your doctor.

FAQs

What is the drug Renagel used to treat?

Renagel, the brand-name prescription medication containing Sevelamer Hydrochloride, is used for the treatment of high blood phosphorus (phosphate) levels in patients on dialysis with severe kidney disease. Sevelamer Hydrochloride is a phosphate binder, which means it is able to bind to phosphate that enters your body through food which prevents it from entering the blood stream. Controlling phosphorus levels is important – especially in those with kidney disease – because if left untreated, complications such as renal bone disease, stroke, or heart disease may occur.
