What is Razadyne ER (Galantamine) prescribed for?

Alzheimer’s is a disease that robs people of their memories. Many a times, in the beginning, most have a hard time remembering recent events, although they can easily recall things that have happened to them years ago. Technically, dementia is a symptom of Alzheimer’s mental decline. And it can lead to various problems with memory, communication and thinking. As time goes on various symptoms may appear, these are some of the most common; Trouble focusing, a hard time doing ordinary activities, feeling confused or frustrated, especially at night, dramatic mood swings -- outbursts of anger, anxiety, and depression, feeling disoriented and getting lost easily, physical problems, such as an odd walk or poor coordination, and trouble communicating.

This medication is used to treat mild to moderate confusion in relation to Alzheimer’s disease. And while it may not cure Alzheimer’s disease, it may improve memory, awareness and the ability to perform daily functions. Razadyne works by restoring the balance of a natural substance, known as neurotransmitters, in the brain.

This medication is taken by mouth with food. Usually once a day, at breakfast. However, it can be taken on a empty stomach if necessary. Drink plenty of fluids with this medication unless instructed otherwise. Also to lower the risk of any side effects your dosage will be gradually increased to your target dose.

Remember your dose is based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment.

Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Do not stop taking it or increase the dosage unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Cautions

Before taking this medication, it is best to advise your doctor if you are allergic Galantamine; or to daffodil plants; or to any other medications or allergies in general. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: severe liver disease, severe kidney disease.

Before taking this medication, it is for the best to inform your doctor of your Medical history, especially if you have ever had the following; liver problems, kidney problems, stomach/intestinal problems (e.g., ulcers, bleeding), heart problems (e.g., sick sinus syndrome, bradycardia, AV block, arrhythmias), breathing/lung problems (e.g., severe asthma, COPD-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), seizures, problems urinating (e.g., due to enlarged prostate).

Side Effects

While minor, some of these side effects may occur. They are as follows; Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of appetite, and weight loss may occur. However if any of these persist or worsen, it’s best to speak with your doctor right away.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: fainting, unusually slow heartbeat, difficult urination.

Get medical help right away if you have any very serious side effects, including: seizures, black/bloody stools, vomit that looks bloody or like coffee grounds, severe stomach/abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

What is Galantamine?

Galantamine is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor sold as the brand-name medication Razadyne ER (extended release). Each Razadyne ER capsule contains a fixed about of Galantamine; at My Drug Center, we carry the 4, 8, 16, and 24 mg capsules. What is Galantamine used for?

Dementia has an effect on memory, thought control, and judgment which causes symptoms such as short term memory loss (followed by long term memory loss), trouble remembering to use the bathroom, and angry or violent behavior. Using this medication will help prevent the breakdown of a certain chemical in the brain (acetylcholine) which can help improve memory, awareness, and the ability to carry out daily tasks and functions.
