What is Nolvadex?
Nolvadex is a prescription medication that is manufactured by AstraZeneca; this medication is also available as a generic alternative, manufactured by many generic manufacturers. It comes in two different strengths; 10 and 20 mg. Each tablet contains the fixed amount of tamoxifen. We carry both the brand and the generic alternative in both strengths, available with a valid prescription.
What is Tamoxifen citrate?
Tamoxifen is the active ingredient that makes Nolvadex therapeutically effective. It is taken orally by mouth and is metabolized in the liver, creating multiple metabolites during the process; it belongs to the drug class called selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERMs). Tamoxifen citrate is the citrate salt of tamoxifen; before tamoxifen is compressed into Nolvadex tablets, it must first be made into its existing salt form, which in the case of Nolvadex, is citrate. If it wasn’t first turned into its salt form, it would not dissolve or absorb into the body very well and would therefore cause the medication to be less effective – if effective at all. So while tamoxifen has beneficial effects, it must first be turned into its salt form (tamoxifen citrate) in order for its benefits to work. To prevent confusion, tamoxifen citrate is commonly referred to as just tamoxifen.
What is Tamoxifen used for?
Tamoxifen is used for certain types of breast cancer in both men and (pre- and post-menopausal) woman; specifically (early and advanced) estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Additionally, anastrozole may be prescribed to help prevent breast cancer. Using tamoxifen will help slow the growth of ER+ breast cancer and can help prevent the risk of developing it by 50% in those who are at high risk (such as someone who has a family history of breast cancer). Tamoxifen can also reduce the risk of reoccurrence in patients who have previously had breast cancer.
How much does Tamoxifen reduce the risk of recurrence?
According to Dr. Robert Wesolowski, assistant professor at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, those who take tamoxifen for five years will reduce their chance of breast cancer returning by nearly 50%. Reduction in reoccurrence and mortality was greater in those who took the medication for roughly 5 years, as oppose to those who took it for only a short period of time. Speak with your doctor to learn more about your risk of reoccurrence after being treated with tamoxifen.
How does Tamoxifen work?
Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), like tamoxifen, work by preventing the effects of estrogen in the breast tissue; estrogen is crucial for the growth of ER+ cancer. Tamoxifen does this by taking over and consuming the estrogen receptors found in the breast cells. When the receptors are occupied with one chemical, which in this case is Tamoxifen, there is no room for other chemicals, like estrogen, to attach to the cell.
What are the side effects of Tamoxifen?
Side effects of tamoxifen (Nolvadex) may include hot flashes, upset stomach or vomiting, weight gain or loss, feeling dizzy, tired, or weak, and back, bone, joint, or muscle pain. However, there may be more side effects not mentioned here. If side effects bother you or do not go away, consult your doctor.
