What is Nizoral Shampoo used for?

Ketoconazole, the active ingredient within Nizoral Shampoo, is used as a treatment for skin infections such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, and certain kinds of dandruff. This medication is also used to treat a skin condition known as pityriasis, which is a fungal infection that causes the lightening and darkening of the skin of the neck, chest, arms or legs.

This medication is known as an azole antifungal, and it works by preventing the growth of the fungus.

If you have any questions about this medication, please direct them to your doctor. If they have any physical material in which they can give you, such as a pamphlet, be sure to read up on all that you can about this medication.

When ready to apply the medication, get your hair wet, and then put a small amount of the shampoo in your hand and then lather your hair, when finished rinse it completely off your scalp.  Dosage and length of treatment depends on the type of infection you have. Do not apply this more often then what has been prescribed to you. Your condition will not get any better but the risk of side effects may increase.

If you by chance get this medication in the eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina, make sure to flush thoroughly with plenty of water.

Take this medication until it is completely finished.  Even if your symptoms dissipate, putting a stop to the medication too early may allow the fungus to continue to grow and may cause a relapse in the infection, and it may give way to various side effects as well.

Before taking this medication, it is best to advise your doctor if you are allergic Ketoconazole; or to other azole antifungals such as clotrimazole, econazole, or miconazole; or to any other medications or allergies in general. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Before taking this medication, it is for the best to inform your doctor of your Medical history.
