Description

What is Maxalt?

Maxalt is a medication prescribed to alleviate migraine headaches. It is not used to prevent a migraine from occurring, but it can relieve the painful and intense headache at the first sign of one starting. Maxalt may also be used for the treatment of milder migraine episodes that do not respond to over-the-counter analgesics like Advil (ibuprofen) or Tylenol (acetaminophen).

You can buy Maxalt online at My Drug Center. We have the Maxalt generic alternative, called Rizatriptan, available for purchase as well.

How does Maxalt work?

Maxalt is an oral tablet containing the active ingredient Rizatriptan, which belongs to the group of medicines called Triptans. The Rizatriptan dosage in the drug works by increasing the sensitivity to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that is involved in regulating mood and pain. It also induces blood vessels to contract, which relieves pressure in the brain that causes migraines.

Before taking Maxalt or the generic Rizatriptan, read all the instructions that was provided by your pharmacist. Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, at the first sign of a migraine. It may be taken with or without a meal, but may work faster when it is taken on an empty stomach. The dosage is based on your medical condition, age, response to treatment, and other drugs you may be taking. For children, the dosage is also based on weight.  Be sure to discuss other medical conditions, known allergies, and list any over-the-counter or prescription medications, and herbal products you are currently taking. This will help your doctor determine if Maxalt is the right migraine medication for you.

Cautions

Maxalt or the Rizatriptan generic may contain medical and non medical ingredients that could cause an allergic reaction. Consult with your doctor about any known allergies before taking Maxalt.

Maxalt may make you dizzy or cause drowsiness so do not drive or attempt any actions that require you to be alert until you know how your body reacts to it. This is not a preventive drug and is taken only to stop the pain as the headache starts. Maxalt is not prescribed for other migraines, including hemiplegic (only one side of head affected), basilar (bottom of head only), ophthalmoplegic (affects eye only), or for cluster headaches. Keep Maxalt and other meds out of children’s reach and never share them with anyone else.

Side Effects

Some Maxalt side effects include:

Fatigue, nausea, dizziness, pain or tightness in chest/neck/jaw, flushing, mild tingling of hands/fingers, hot flashes, and dry mouth.

If any side effects of Rizatriptan become unmanageable speak with your doctor or pharmacist for help in managing any side effects. For any serious side effects that occur speak with your doctor right away for further treatment options.
