What is Lotemax Eye Drops (Loteprednol) prescribed for?

The eye is a very fragile organ and it requires an extreme amount of care before, during, and after a surgical procedure to minimise any damage. Some of the effects of surgery, when completed, are for the eye to become swollen and for it to be in pain.

Loteprednol, the active ingredient within Lotemax Eye Drops, does its job by relieving symptoms such as swelling, redness, and itching. Loteprednol belongs to a class of medications known as corticosteroids.

Speak with your doctor if you have any questions regarding this medication, and be sure to read upon any information provided to you.

As your doctor will direct you, do not wear any contact lenses while using this medication.  To avoid any contamination, make sure the tip of the dropper does no touch your eye or any surface. To apply, gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch. Then place the prescribed amount of drops into the pouch. Gently close your eye and look down. Take as many drops as you doctor directs.

If you are using any other eye medication, wait for at least 5 to 10 minutesbefore applying the other medications.

Cautions

Before taking this medication, it is best to advise your doctor if you are allergic to Loteprednol; or to any other medications or allergies in general.

Also it is best to notify your doctor of your medical history. Inform you doctor if you have had any serious health issues in the past, such as; eye infections, cataracts, glaucoma, severe nearsightedness (myopia), diabetes.

After you apply this drug, your vision may become temporarily blurred. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.

Side Effects

Some of these side effects may occur when taking this medication, they are as follows; Temporary blurred vision may occur when you apply this medication. A feeling as if something is in your eye may also occur. However if any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor right away.

If you are experiencing any of these rare but very serious side effects, seek medical help right away. The side effects are as follows; vision problems/changes, eye pain, headache, dizziness.

This medication may mask the signs of an eye infection. It may also put you at greater risk of developing an eye infection, especially with prolonged use. Report right away any new or worsening symptoms such as eye discharge/swelling/redness/itching/pain, vision problems/changes, or no improvement of your current eye condition. Your doctor will need to adjust your treatment.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

The diagnosis with your doctor will be able to determine the best dosage for your treatment. Work with your doctor closely for dosage and dosing schedules.

 

 What happens if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose as soon you realize you have forgotten. If the forgotten dose is closer to your next scheduled dose, take the next schedule dose to avoid overlapping in dose.

 

 What is the best way to store this medication?

This medication is stored at room temperature, and should be kept away from children and pets. Do not throw away this medication in the wastebasket. If you are uncertain how to dispose of this medication speak with your pharmacist for help in safely disposing of this medication.
