Keppra is prescribed to treat and prevent seizures in adults and children with epilepsy. Keppra is an extended-release tablet that contains the active ingredient Levetiracetam, and is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. The Levetiracetam dosage in the drug works by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain. There are numerous nerve cells in our brain and nerves that are a source of communication through electrical activity. If this activity is not regulated, it can become quite rapid and repetitive which results in abnormal functioning and a seizure.
Before taking Keppra XR or the Levetiracetam generic, read all the instructions that were provided by your pharmacist. Take Keppra XR orally once a day with a full glass of water. Swallow the tablet or the extended-release tablet whole; do not break, crush, or chew it. There is an oral liquid form of this medicine if you or your child cannot swallow the tablets.
