What is Keppra XR used for?
Keppra is prescribed to treat and prevent seizures in adults and children with epilepsy. There are several types of seizures: a partial or absence seizure may cause a person to pause from what they were doing and stare blankly for a few moments, then simply carry on with what they were doing. Some people may speaking nonsense words or sentences, or loss of consciousness and twitching or stiffen when they have a partial or absence seizure. Some people may twitch or rapidly blink their eyes for a time and be slightly disoriented afterwards.
A grand mal seizure is what we all imagine a convulsion or fit to be. The person usually falls to the ground unconscious and stiffens for several seconds and begins to twitch and jerk for a minute or two. When it has ended, the person lays limps and slowly regains consciousness
How does Keppra XR work?
Keppra is an extended-release tablet that contains the active ingredient Levetiracetam, and is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. The Levetiracetam dosage in the drug works by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain. There are numerous nerve cells in our brain and nerves that are a source of communication through electrical activity. If this activity is not regulated, it can become quite rapid and repetitive which results in abnormal functioning and a seizure.
Before taking Keppra XR or the Levetiracetam generic, read all the instructions that were provided by your pharmacist. Take Keppra XR orally once a day with a full glass of water. Swallow the tablet or the extended-release tablet whole; do not break, crush, or chew it. There is an oral liquid form of this medicine if you or your child cannot swallow the tablets. Keppra XR can be administered with or without a meal. Make sure you take the medication at the same time each day to create a routine for yourself and to ensure an even spread of the Levetiracetam dosage in your system. For optimal results take this medication on a regular basis. Do not change or increase your dose. You should continue taking this medication even if you feel well.
Keppra XR or the Levetiracetam generic may contain medical and non medical ingredients that could cause an allergic reaction. Consult with your doctor about any known allergies before taking Keppra XR. Speak with your doctor about any known medical conditions relating to problems with blood flow to the brain, diabetes, heart problems, problems with your nervous system problems, low white blood cell count, problems swallowing, and troubles breathing while asleep. Tell your doctor about any current medications or supplementation to avoid interactions or unwanted side effects of Levetiracetam.
You should always tell your healthcare professional about all prescription, non-prescription, over the counter (OTC), illegal and recreational drugs, herbal remedies, and nutritional and dietary supplements. Certain medications may cause Keppra to be less effective or produce side effects.
Keppra has been known to cause suicidal thoughts/actions in a small number of people who are using it. You should contact your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of suicide and/or attempt to commit suicide, or if you experience new or worsening depression, anxiety, and irritability.
Some Keppra XR side effects include:
Sleepiness, Weakness, Dizziness, Infection, Nasal congestion, Decreased appetite, Irritability, Becoming aggressive, Feeling tired
Other serious Keppra XR side effects are:
Memory problems, spinning sensation, toothache, unexplained bruising, extremely sleepiness, feeling of weakness, problems with muscle coordination that impact ability to walk or move, and mild skin rash
If any Keppra XR or side effects of Levetiracetam become unmanageable speak with your doctor or pharmacist for help in managing any side effects. For any serious side effects that occur speak with your doctor right away for further treatment options.
