Kenalog Orabase Paste is a medication consisting of potent steroid called triamcinolone. We carry the generic alternative of this medication in 0.10%.

Triamcinolone paste (Kenalog Orabase Paste) is applied to the inside of the mouth to allow temporary relief of mouth ulcers and sores. Triamcinolone is a medium-strength corticosteroid that relieves symptoms of pain, tingling, or burning that is associated with mouth ulcers and sores. People may get these irritating and painful sores/ulcers by accidently biting your cheeks, lips, or tongue, injury from a toothbrush, constant rubbing against misaligned or sharp teeth, dentures or braces, or poor oral hygiene.

Triamcinolone paste is effective in relieving pain associated with mouth ulcers/sores due to its ability to reduce inflammation in the body, allowing a decrease in swelling, itching, and pain.

Read all the instructions on the label before using the paste; if your doctor has directed you to do it differently than instructions here; follow your doctor’s instructions.

Wash your hands before and after applying the paste to the affected area. Only use this paste directly on the sore or ulcer and do not swallow the paste. You do not need a large portion of the medicine; a thin layer will be just as – if not more – effective. Avoid rubbing the medicine in; apply by dabbing it on. Apply at bedtime or after meals. Stop using triamcinolone paste as soon as symptoms are controlled.

Dose adjustment or special precautions may be required

Before starting treatment, tell your doctor about all current medical conditions and if you have ever had any type of skin infection, a skin reaction to any steroid medicine, liver disease, diabetes, or an adrenal gland disorder.

Risks

Medicines that consist of steroids are capable of increasing the sugar levels in your blood and/or urine. This should be noted by patients who have diabetes.

High doses or long term use of this medication can cause thinning skin, easy bruising, changes in body fat, increased acne or facial hair, menstrual problems, impotence, or loss of interest in sex.

Common side effects of triamcinolone paste may include:

burning, itching, dryness, or other irritation of treated skin; redness or crusting around your hair follicles; redness or itching around your mouth; allergic skin reaction; stretch marks; or white or "pruned" appearance of the skin (caused by covering treated skin with a tight bandage or other covering).

The above side effects should not alarm you.

Serious side effects of triamcinolone paste may include:

worsening of your skin condition; redness, warmth, swelling, oozing, or severe irritation of any treated skin; blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights;

high blood sugar--increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, fruity breath odor; or

absorbing medicine through your skin or gums--weight gain (especially in your face or your upper back and torso), slow wound healing, thinning or discolored skin, increased body hair, muscle weakness, nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, mood changes, menstrual changes, sexual changes.

What should I do if I accidently swallow the medicine?

Seek medical attention right away or call your local poison control if anyone has swallowed the medicine; especially children.

Does it have any medication interactions?

It doesn’t have any known major interactions but it does have some minor ones. Some of these drugs include Aspirin Low Strength (aspirin), Benadryl (diphenhydramine), Cymbalta (duloxetine), Fish Oil (omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids), Flonase (fluticasone nasal), and Lyrica (pregabalin).

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember or skip it if your next dose is approaching soon. Do not try to make up for the miss dose by doubling up on dosages.
