What is Edarbyclor (Azilsartan/Chlorthalidone) prescribed for?

High Blood pressure is a measure of the force of blood that pushes against the blood vessels walls. Hypertention, as it’s also called, can be dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to pump blood out to the body and then contributes to the hardening of arteries, to stroke, kidney disease and to heart failure.

This product contains 2 drugs; azilsartan and chlorthalidone. Azilsartan works by relaxing the blood vessels so you blood may flow at a much easier pace. Chlorthalidone causes your body to rid itself of any extra salt and water by making you urinate more often.

This medication comes in two different doses which are 40mg/12.5mg and 40mg/25mg. Remember your dose is based on your medical background and your overall response to the treatment. If your doctor or pharmacist has given you some information in the form of a pamphlet, take the time to read up on this drug, and if you have any questions or concerns regarding this medication, please consult your doctor.

This medication is to be taken by mouth, once a day, and can be taken with or without food. Keep in mind that it is best to take this medication at least 4 hours before bedtime, if you wish to take it in the evening.

Remember the dosage is based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment. And to gain the most benefit from it, it is best to take this medication regularly. And it is important to keep taking this medication, regardless if you are feeling well, since most people with high blood pressure, do not feel sick. It may take several weeks before you see any effect from the medication.

Cautions

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to azilsartan or chlorthalidone; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history. Especially if you have had any of the following; kidney disease, liver disease, severe loss of body water and minerals (dehydration), untreated mineral imbalance (such as high/low potassium, low magnesium, high calcium, low sodium), gout, lupus.

Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can increase the risk for lightheadedness or a serious loss of body water (dehydration). Report prolonged diarrhea or vomiting to your doctor. To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of fluids unless your doctor directs you otherwise.

If you have diabetes, this product may affect your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet.

This product may affect your potassium levels. Before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

 

This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Tell your doctor right away if you get sunburned or have skin blisters/redness.

 

Side Effects

Common side effects of this medication do include the following; Dizziness or light-headedness may.  It is best to speak with your doctor promptly if you are experiencing any of these side effects.

This product may cause a loss of too much body water (dehydration) and salt/minerals. Tell your doctor right away if you have any symptoms of dehydration or mineral loss, including: extreme thirst, very dry mouth, muscle cramps/weakness, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, confusion.

However unlikely, these serious side effects should to brought to you doctor’s attention right way; fainting, severe tiredness, big toe/joint pain, symptoms of a high potassium blood level (such as muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat), signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine).

Get medical help right away if you have any very serious side effects, including: decrease in vision, eye pain.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

What happens if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose as soon you realize you have forgotten. If the forgotten dose is closer to your next scheduled dose, take the next schedule dose to avoid overlapping in dose.
