What is Dostinex (Cabergoline) prescribed for?
This medication is used to treat high levels of prolactin hormone within the body. High levels of prolactin found within a woman can cause symptoms such as unwanted breast milk and missed periods, and may cause difficulties when trying to become pregnant. High levels of prolactin in men however, can cause symptoms such as enlarged breasts and a decrease in sexual ability or desire. This medication woks to release the prolactin from the pituitary gland.
This medication is taken by mouth, with or without food. And it is usually only taken twice a week, or however you doctor has prescribed.
Remember that the dosage given to you is based on your medical history and your response to the treatment. Your doctor will start you at a lower dosage and will slowly increase it as time goes by, to decrease any side effects.
Take this medication on a regular basis to gain the most benefit.
Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you are allergic to Cabergoline; or to other ergot medications (such as ergotamine); or if you have any other allergies in general.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), heart valve disease, abnormal scarring/thickening of the lining in the lungs/heart/behind the abdomen (pulmonary/pericardial/retroperitoneal fibrosis).
Common side effects of this medication do include the following; Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, constipation, dizziness, lightheadedness, or tiredness. It is best to speak with your doctor promptly if you are experiencing any of these side effects.
However, seek medical attention right away if you are experiencing any of the following; persistent cough, mental/mood changes (such as nervousness), unusual strong urges (such as increased gambling, increased sexual urges), vision changes, painful menses, breast pain, symptoms of heart failure (such as shortness of breath, swelling ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, unusual/sudden weight gain).
Get medical help right away if you have any serious side effects, including: chest pain, signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine, lower back/flank pain).
What happens if I suddenly stop taking this medication?
There may be a relapse in symptoms as well as side effects. You should speak your doctor before stop taking this medication.
What is the best dosage to take?
The diagnosis with your doctor will be able to determine the best dosage for your treatment. Work with your doctor closely for dosage and dosing schedules.
What happens if I miss a dose?
You should take the missed dose as soon you realize you have forgotten. If the forgotten dose is closer to your next scheduled dose, take the next schedule dose to avoid overlapping in dose.
What is the best way to store this medication?
This medication is stored at room temperature, and should be kept away from children and pets. Do not throw away this medication in the wastebasket. If you are uncertain how to dispose of this medication speak with your pharmacist for help in safely disposing of this medication.
