What is Dolobid (Diflunisal) prescribed for?

There are many forms of arthritis. Naturally, it is the so called “wear and tear” that happens when your joints are over used. This generally happens as you age. But it may also appear due to joint injuries.

This medication is used to relieve pain from various medical conditions. In short, when taken this medication reduces, pain, swelling and overall joint stiffness that is caused by arthritis. By reducing these symptoms you may go about your day without pain. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

This medication comes in the singular strength of 500mg. Remember your dose is based on your medical background and your overall response to the treatment. If your doctor or pharmacist has given you some information in the form of a pamphlet, take the time to read up on this drug, and if you have any questions or concerns regarding this medication, please consult your doctor.

This medication is taken by mouth, with a full glass of water. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this medication. You may also take this medication with food or milk to prevent an upset stomach.

Swallow this tablet whole. Do not crush, or chew on the tablets. Doing so may increase the risk of side effects.

Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not take more than 1,500 milligrams per day. To minimize side effect risks (e.g., stomach bleeding), use this medication at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible length of time. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed. For ongoing conditions such as arthritis, continue taking it as directed by your doctor. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Cautions

Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you are allergic to Diflunisal; or to aspirin or other salicylates (e.g., choline salicylate), or other NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib); or if you have any other allergies in general.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: asthma (including a history of worsening breathing after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs), liver disease, poorly controlled diabetes, stomach/intestine/esophagus problems (e.g., bleeding, ulcers), heart disease (e.g., history of heart attack), stroke, high blood pressure, swelling (edema, fluid retention), blood disorders (e.g., anemia), bleeding or clotting problems, growths in the nose (nasal polyps).

Kidney problems can sometimes occur with the use of NSAID medications, including diflunisal. Problems are more likely to occur if you are dehydrated, have heart failure or kidney disease, are an older adult, or if you take certain medications (see also Drug Interactions section). Drink plenty of fluids as directed by your doctor to prevent dehydration and tell your doctor right away if you have a change in the amount of urine.

Side Effects

Common side effects of this medication do include the following; Upset stomach, heartburn, headache, tiredness, drowsiness, or dizziness. It is best to speak with your doctor promptly if you are experiencing any of these side effects.

However, seek medical attention right away if you are experiencing any of the following; stomach pain, vision changes, hearing changes (e.g., ringing in the ears), mental/mood changes (e.g., confusion, hallucinations), fast/pounding heartbeat, persistent/severe headache, fainting, difficult/painful swallowing, symptoms of heart failure (such as swelling ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, unusual/sudden weight gain).

Tell your doctor right away if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine), easy bruising/bleeding, signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat), unexplained stiff neck.

This drug may rarely cause serious (possibly fatal) liver disease. If you notice any of the following rare but very serious side effects, stop taking diflunisal and tell your doctor right away: yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine, unusual/extreme tiredness, severe stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

There may be a relapse in symptoms as well as side effects. You should speak your doctor before stop taking this medication.

 

What is the best dosage to take?

The diagnosis with your doctor will be able to determine the best dosage for your treatment. Work with your doctor closely for dosage and dosing schedules.

 

What happens if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose as soon you realize you have forgotten. If the forgotten dose is closer to your next scheduled dose, take the next schedule dose to avoid overlapping in dose.

 

What is the best way to store this medication?

This medication is stored at room temperature, and should be kept away from children and pets. Do not throw away this medication in the wastebasket. If you are uncertain how to dispose of this medication speak with your pharmacist for help in safely disposing of this medication.
