What is Differin Cream (Adapalene) prescribed for?

Acne starts with greasy secretions of the skin’s oil glands plug the pores. Depending on the opening of the pore, the clog can take form of a blackhead or pimples. And while acne is mostly seen in youths, mostly teens, about 20% of adults still share the burden of acne.

This medication is used to treat acne, and in using it you may decrease the number and the severity of acne pimples and promote a quick healing for pimples that do develop. Overall, this medication functions by affected the growth of the cells and decreasing the swelling and inflammation.

This medication comes in a singular strength of 0.10%. Remember your dose is based on your medical background and your overall response to the treatment. If your doctor or pharmacist has given you some information in the form of a pamphlet, take the time to read up on this drug, and if you have any questions or concerns regarding this medication, please consult your doctor.

The cream should be applied to the affected areas of the skin, only once daily, and usually at nighttime. Wash your hands beforehand. And once the affected areas have been cleaned and dried, layer a thin film of cream on the acne lesions appear.  Use enough to cover the entire affected areas lightly.  While apply you may feel a warmth and a slight stinging. This may occur shortly after you have applied this medication.

Make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Use only what has been given to do and what has been prescribed to you.

Cautions

Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you are allergic to Adapalene; or to vitamin A-related drugs (other retinoids such as isotretinoin); or if you have any other allergies in general.

This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Weather extremes such as wind or cold may also be irritating to the skin. Use sunscreen daily and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Tell your doctor right away if you get sunburned or have skin blisters/redness. Wait until your skin has completely recovered from a sunburn before using adapalene.

Avoid electrolysis, waxing and chemical depilatories for hair removal on the treated areas while using this product.

If you have recently used products containing sulfur, resorcinol or salicylic acid, use adapalene with caution. Wait until the effects of such products on the skin have decreased before using adapalene.

Side Effects

A brief sensation of warmth or stinging may occur right after applying the medication. Skin redness, dryness, itching, scaling, mild burning, or worsening of acne may occur during the first 2-4 weeks of using the medication. These effects usually decrease with continued use. If any of these effects lasts or gets worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Your doctor may want you to decrease how often you use adapalene, change the strength, or have you stop using it.

There is some serious side effects to this medication, and if you are encountering any of them, notify your doctor right away. These side effects are listed below; very red/irritated skin, an intense burning sensation, eye redness and watering (conjunctivitis), eyelid swelling, skin discoloration.
