Description

Cyclocort Lotion is a high potency topical corticosteroid made up of amcinonide. You can buy this medication as the brand name Cyclocort Lotion or just as its generic alternative/active ingredient, amcinonide. This Lotion is available in 0.10% bottles.

Cyclocort Lotion is used for the relief of a variety of skin conditions often accompanied by inflammation. Some of these conditions include, but are not limited to, eczema, dermatitis, allergies and rash. Ideally this medication is used in patients between 18 and 65 years old. Amcinonide works by reducing the amount inflammation of the skin.

Ensure you use this Lotion exactly the way your doctor has told you to. It is always a good idea to wash your hands before starting to lessen the chance of bacterial infections. Continue using this lotion even if you feel your condition has cleared up. Keep in mind that this medication is for topical use only; do not take this medication orally. Avoid putting this lotion on your face, underarms or the groin unless specifically told to by your doctor.

Clean the area; ensure it is completely dry.

Add a thin layer of lotion; gently rub in.

Do not cover; this also includes make up as well as clothing and bandages.

This is done 2-3 times daily.

Cautions

Make sure all of your health care providers (including dentists, nurses, and pharmacists) that you are using Cyclocort Lotion. Before using this Lotion make sure you have told your doctor about all other skin medications you use.  Also make your doctor aware if you have ever had poor blood circulation or immune system problems.

Do not put Cyclocort Lotion on any open wounds, cuts, scrapes or damaged skin.

It is rare however if Cyclocort Lotion is used for a prolonged time and using it over large areas of the skin, sometimes difficulties arise for the body to respond to stress physically, therefore it is important to let whomever know before surgery what you are on.

During pregnancy, Cyclocort Lotion should only be used if the doctor believes the benefits outweigh the risks.

It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast feeding on Cyclocort Lotion.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Cyclocort Lotion may include:

  • Dry skin.
  • Itching.
  • Burning.
  • Stinging.

Serious side effects of Cyclocort Lotion may include:

  • Change in color of skin.
  • Skin changes (pimples, stretch marks, slow healing, hair growth).
  • Skin irritation.
  • Thinning of the skin.

Call your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects.

Signs to watch for

Allergic reaction- rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.

High blood sugar - confusion, feeling sleepy, more thirst, more hungry, passing urine more often, flushing, fast breathing, or breath that smells like fruit.

Cushing's disease - weight gain in the upper back or belly, moon face, very bad headache, or slow healing.

Weak adrenal gland - a very bad upset stomach or throwing up, very bad dizziness or passing out, muscle weakness, feeling very tired, mood changes, not hungry, or weight loss.

What other forms of Cyclocort are there?

Other forms include Cyclocort Ointment and Cyclocort Cream.

What is the difference between the cream, lotion and ointment?

Ointment is 80% oil 20% water where as cream is 50% oil and 50%water. Lotion is similar to a cream but is even lighter or may have a less thick formulation. People with dry skin would want an ointment, where people with oily skin would want cream. Having these multiple forms allows everyone of different skin types to be able to get relief from their condition. They also may contain different in-active ingredients.

Is this lotion okay to use on children?

Unfortunately this product has not been approved for use in children under the age of 18 years old.

How long should I be using this lotion for?

Face, scalp and skin fold areas (like armpit); max of 5 days.

Rest of body; max of 2-3 weeks.
