What is Clobex Lotion (Clobetasol Propionate) prescribed for?

Eczema is a common issue that causes the skin to become inflamed, red and itchy and at times, even flakey. Many of the symptoms for Eczema are itching, scaling, redness, cracking skin, and fluid filled blisters. Depending on the cause eczema may flare up at any time and cause severe symptoms.

Dermatitis however, appears to be a rash.  Your skin becomes red and tender after you have touched something. When your body mistakenly thinks your body is under attack, after you have touched something, it springs into action, creating antibodies to fight off the supposed invader. A chain of events causes a release of a chemical called histamine. This is what causes the supposed allergic reaction, in this case, the rash. Psoriasis is a skin disorder that causes skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. This makes the skin build up into bumpy red patches covered with white scales. They can grow anywhere, but most appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.

This medication is a product to be used only by adults. It can treat a variety of skin conditions, such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. It works by reducing the swelling and itching and the redness that can occur in these types of conditions. This medicine is a very strong (super high potency) corticosteroid.

This medication is not recommended for use with children younger than 18 years of age due to an increased risk of side effects. Speak with your doctor for further information.

This medication comes in a singular dose which is 0.05%. Remember your dose is based on your medical background and your overall response to the treatment. If your doctor or pharmacist has given you some information in the form of a pamphlet, take the time to read up on this drug, and if you have any questions or concerns regarding this medication, please consult your doctor.

Use this medication on the skin only. However it is imperative that you do not use it on the face, groin or underarms, unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Wash and dry your hands before applying the lotion to the skin. Clean and dry the affected are, then apply a thin film of the medication to the affected area, then gently rub it into the skin. This is usually done 2 times a day unless prescribed otherwise by your doctor.

After applying the medicine, make sure to wash your hands. Avoid getting this lotion in the eyes, nose, and mouth. Having this lotion touch your eyes may worsen or cause glaucoma. It is best to be very careful when applying this medication onto the skin.

Use this medication exactly as prescribed to you. Do not use for longer than 4 weeks, unless directed to by your doctor.  If no improvement occurs within 2 weeks, or if you condition worsens, stop using the medication and inform your doctor right away.

Before taking this medication, advise your doctor if you are allergic to Clobetasol Propionate, or to any other steroids (e.g., hydrocortisone, dexamethasone); or if you have any other allergies

Speak with your doctor of your medical history before taking this medication, especially if you have had any of the following; poor blood circulation, diabetes, other skin conditions (e.g., rosacea, perioral dermatitis), immune system problems.

Rarely, using corticosteroid medications for a long time or over large areas of skin can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Therefore, before having surgery or emergency treatment, or if you get a serious illness/injury, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication or have used this medication within the past few months.

Burning, stinging, itching, irritation, dryness, or redness may occur when this medication is first applied to the skin. This should disappear in a few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor promptly.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: stretch marks (striae), skin thinning/discoloration, excessive hair growth, acne, hair bumps (folliculitis).

Skin infections can become worse when using this medication. Notify your doctor if redness, swelling or irritation does not improve

Rarely, it is possible this medication will be absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream. This can lead to side effects of too much corticosteroid. These side effects are more likely in children, and in people who use this medication for a long time or over large areas of the skin. Tell your doctor right away if any of the following side effects occur: unusual/extreme tiredness, weight loss, headache, swelling ankles/feet, increased thirst/urination, vision problems.

What happens if I suddenly stop taking this medication?

There may be a relapse in symptoms as well as side effects. You should speak your doctor before stop taking this medication.

What is the best dosage to take?

The diagnosis with your doctor will be able to determine the best dosage for your treatment. Work with your doctor closely for dosage and dosing schedules.

What happens if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose as soon you realize you have forgotten. If the forgotten dose is closer to your next scheduled dose, take the next schedule dose to avoid overlapping in dose.

What is the best way to store this medication?
