What is CiproDex Otic Suspension (Ciprofloxacin/Dexomethasone) prescribed for?

Ear infections often occur during a cold, throat infection or an allergy attack that causes fluid to become trapped in the middle ear. This condition most affects children, although it can affects adults as well.

This medication is used as a treatment towards various forms of bacterial ear infections.  It can be used to treat middle ear infections in children with the aid of an ear tube, it also works to treat swimmer’s ear in children and adults. This medication is a combo drug, using both Ciprofloxacin and Dexomethasone, this medication works by stopping the growth of bacteria and helps reduce the swelling of the ear and the discomfort that comes along with it.

This medication comes in the singular dose, which is 0.3%/0.1%. Remember your dose is based on your medical background and your overall response to the treatment. If your doctor or pharmacist has given you some information in the form of a pamphlet, take the time to read up on this drug, and if you have any questions or concerns regarding this medication, please consult your doctor.

This medication is usually used twice a day, or as directed by your doctor. Do note that the ear canal must be clean and dry before using this medication.

To apply the ear drops, make sure to wash your hands first, to avoid contamination. Do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your ear or any other surface. Shake the container well before use.

When treating an ear infection it is best that someone else dispense the medication for you. The patient should lie down with the infected ear facing upward. Hold the dropper directly over the ear, then place the prescribed amount of drops into the ear canal. Then gently pull the earlobe up and down to ensure  the drops flown down into the ear canal.

Do not rinse the dropper, replace the cap after use.

Cautions

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin or dexamethasone; or to quinolone antibiotics (such as levofloxacin); or if you have any other allergies.

When seeing your doctor, it is best to let them know of you medical history, especially if it includes the following; ear infections caused by a fungus or virus (such as herpes simplex).

Side Effects

Discomfort, pain, or itching in the ear may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a new fungal ear infection. Do not use this medication for longer than prescribed. Contact your doctor if you notice new or worsening symptoms.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

What happens if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose as soon as you realize you have forgotten. If the forgotten dose is closer to your next scheduled dose, take the next schedule dose to avoid overlapping in dose.

 

What is the best way to store this medication?

This medication is stored at room temperature, and should be kept away from children and pets. Do not throw away this medication in the wastebasket. If you are uncertain how to dispose of this medication speak with your pharmacist for help in safely disposing of this medication.
