What is Ciloxin Eye Drops (Ciprofloxacin) prescribed for?

A bacterial eye infection may start turning your eyes into a shade of pink, and may cause your eyes to be itchy and to swell. There are various types of bacterial eye infections. If you think you may have an eye infection, it’s probably best to speak with your doctor right away.

And this medication is used as a treatment for various eye infections. However, this medication only works for bacterial eye infections. It works by stopping the growth of the bacteria.

This medication comes in a singular dose which is 0.30%. Remember your dose is based on your medical background and your overall response to the treatment. If your doctor or pharmacist has given you some information in the form of a pamphlet, take the time to read up on this drug, and if you have any questions or concerns regarding this medication, please consult your doctor.

To apply the eye drops, it is best to wash your hands first. To avoid any contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. Do not wear any contact lenses while taking this medication. 

Tilt yor head back and look upward and pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the eye. Then look downward and gently close your eyes for about 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger over your eye and gently apply a little bit of pressure.  Doing so will prevent the mediation from draining out. Do your best not to blink and do not rub your eye.

Do not rinse the dropper; replace the dropper cap after each use.

If you are taking any other eye medications along with this medication, wait at least 5 minutes before applying the other medications.

Cautions

Before taking this medication, it is best to advise your doctor if you are allergic to Ciprofloxacin, or to any other medications or allergies in general. Also it is best to notify your doctor of your medical history. Inform them you have had the following; contact lens use, other eye problems.

Your vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable after applying this drug. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcoholic beverages.

Side Effects

This medication may temporarily sting or burn your eyes for a minute or two when applied. Eye discomfort, itching, redness, tearing, eyelid crusting, feeling as if something is in your eye, blurred vision, a bad taste in your mouth, or sensitivity to light may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

White crystals may appear in the treated eye(s) after the first few days of ciprofloxacin use, but usually go away in a few weeks. This effect is harmless. Keep your scheduled appointments so your doctor can closely monitor your eye infection. If you notice any new or worsening eye symptoms (e.g., increased discharge, eye pain), tell your doctor right away.

Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a new fungal eye infection. Do not use it for longer than prescribed. Contact your doctor if you notice new or worsening symptoms.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: staining of the eyes, swelling in or around the eye, eye pain, worsening vision.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

There may be a relapse in symptoms as well as side effects. You should speak your doctor before stop taking this medication.

 

What is the best dosage to take?

The diagnosis with your doctor will be able to determine the best dosage for your treatment. Work with your doctor closely for dosage and dosing schedules.

 

What happens if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose as soon you realize you have forgotten. If the forgotten dose is closer to your next scheduled dose, take the next schedule dose to avoid overlapping in dose.

 

What is the best way to store this medication?

This medication is stored at room temperature, and should be kept away from children and pets. Do not throw away this medication in the wastebasket. If you are uncertain how to dispose of this medication speak with your pharmacist for help in safely disposing of this medication.
