Avodart is a medication that is commonly prescribed to treat men who have symptoms of enlarged prostate gland, which is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Benign enlargement of the prostate is a problem that occurs in men as they get older. The prostate gland is located below the bladder, and as it enlarges, there are certain muscles in the gland that may become tight and get in the way of the tube that drains urine from the bladder (urethra). How does Avodart work?

Avodart comes as a tablet to be taken orally, containing the active ingredient Dutasteride, which belongs to a class of drugs known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. The Dutasteride dosage of this medication works by stopping the conversion of testosterone into dihdrotestosterone (DHT) in the body.  DHT is the hormone that is responsible for prostate tissue growth. When too much prostate tissue develops, it causes trouble with urination problems.
