What is Atacand (Candesartan) prescribed for?

High blood pressure is the measure of the force of blood pushing against the blood vessels walls. The heart pumps blood into the blood vessel, which carry the blood throughout the body. Hypertension, as it is also called, is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder and contributes to the hardening of the arteries, stroke, kidney disease, and to heart failure.

Atacand is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure also lowers the risk of strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems. Candesartan, the active ingredient in Atacand, works by relaxing the blood vessels so blood can flow at easier pace. This medication is also used in the treatment of heart failure.

This medication is taken orally, with our without food. Usually taken once or twice a day. The dosage is based on your medical history and your response to the treatment.  You must use this medication regularly to gain the most amount of benefits from it.  It is important to continue taking this medication, even if you feel well during its use. Notify your doctor if you condition does not improve or worsens.

Before taking candesartan, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, high blood levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia), loss of too much body water and/or minerals (dehydration).

Too much sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may cause you to feel lightheaded. Report prolonged diarrhea or vomiting to your doctor.

This product may increase your potassium levels. Before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Dizziness, tiredness, or lightheadedness may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Runny nose or sore throat may also occur. If any of these effects persists or worsens, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: fainting, symptoms of a high potassium blood level (such as muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat).

Although candesartan may be used to prevent kidney problems or treat people who have kidney problems, it may also rarely cause serious kidney problems or make them worse. Your doctor will check your kidney function while you are taking candesartan. Tell your doctor right away if you have any signs of kidney problems such as a change in the amount of urine.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

What happens if I suddenly stop taking this medication?

There may be a relapse in symptoms as well as side effects. You should speak your doctor before stop taking this medication.

What is the best dosage to take?

The diagnosis with your doctor will be able to determine the best dosage for your treatment. Work with your doctor closely for dosage and dosing schedules.

What happens if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose as soon you realize you have forgotten. If the forgotten dose is closer to your next scheduled dose, take the next schedule dose to avoid overlapping in dose.

What is the best way to store this medication?
