What is Aristocort Ointment (Triamcinolone) prescribed for?

Eczema is a skin condition, and it is common problem that causes the skin to become inflamed. It shows itself as itchy, dry, thickened skin, which is usually on the hands, neck, face, and legs. However it can occur anywhere.

Dermatitis can appear to be as some sort of rash, it becomes red and tender after you have touched something.  When you have Dermatitis, when you touch something, your immune system mistakenly thinks your body is under attack, therefore it begins to create antibodies to fight off the invader. A chain of events causes a release of chemicals, including histamines. And that is what causes the allergic reaction.

This medication is used for a variety of skin conditions, such as eczema, dermatitis, allergies, and rashes. Triamcinolone, the active ingredient in Aristocort Ointment, works by reducing the swelling, itching and redness that occurs in these types of conditions.  This medication is a medium to strong potency corticosteroid. The potency is dependent on the strength and the form in which you use.

This medication is in form of a cream, therefore you are to only use this medication on the skin. Do not use it on the face, groin, or underarms, unless you are directly prompted to do so by your doctor.

Wash and dry your hands. Do note to wash the area where you will be applying the medication. Firstly, apply on a thin film of the medication to the affected are and then gently rub it in. This is usually done 2 to 4 times a day or as directed by your doctor. Do not cover, bandage or wrap the area unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Wash your hands after applying the medication (unless of course the medication is used to treat your hands) When applying this medication near the eyes, avoid getting it in the eyes, or in the nose or mouth. If you do get the medication in the eyes, nose, and mouth, rinse with plenty of water.

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Triamcinolone or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: poor blood circulation, immune system problems. Do not use if there is an infection or sore present in the area to be treated.

Rarely, using corticosteroid medications for a long time or over large areas of skin can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Therefore, before having surgery or emergency treatment, or if you get a serious illness/injury, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication or have used this medication within the past few months.

Though it is unlikely, this medication may temporarily slow down a child's growth if used for a long time. See the doctor regularly so your child's height can be checked.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk when applied to the skin. Other medications in this class pass into breast milk when taken by mouth. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Burning, itching, irritation, or dryness may occur when this medication is first applied to the skin. This should disappear in a few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Tell your doctor promptly if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: stretch marks, skin thinning/discoloration, acne, greatly increased hair growth, "hair bumps" (folliculitis).

Skin infections can become worse when this medication is used. Notify your doctor if redness, swelling, or irritation do not improve.

What happens if I suddenly stop taking this medication?

There may be a relapse in symptoms as well as side effects. You should speak your doctor before stop taking this medication.

What is the best dosage to take?

The diagnosis with your doctor will be able to determine the best dosage for your treatment. Work with your doctor closely for dosage and dosing schedules.

What happens if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose as soon you realize you have forgotten. If the forgotten dose is closer to your next scheduled dose, take the next schedule dose to avoid overlapping in dose.

What is the best way to store this medication?
